A Thought on ‘Faith’

I’m currently hooked on the horror-slash-thriller-slash-drama series Supernatural. And the last episode I watched last night (or probably today at dawn) is Episode 12, ‘Faith.’

I was and still am struck by the quote of one of the guest stars (well, the featured guest star) for that episode: Layla (Julie Benz), a faithful woman suffering from brain tumor.

As the episode ended, hopeful Layla visited introvert yet cool-acting Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) to say their goodbyes. But in the course of their conversation, Layla mentioned how she felt toward not being miraculously healed by the preacher, unlike Dean. Our somewhat affected lead character tried to express his dismay that Layla would die, and here’s what took place:

Dean: It must be rough, to believe in something so much and have it disappoint you like that.
Layla: You wanna hear something weird? I’m okay, really. I guess if you’re going to have faith, you can’t just have it when the miracles happen. You have to have it when they don’t.
Dean: So what now?
Layla: God works in mysterious ways. Goodbye Dean.
Dean: Hey, um, you know, I’m not much of the praying type, but I’m gonna pray for you.
Layla: Well, there’s a miracle right there.

Moving.
